About the Department

Established in 2019, the Department of Home Science offers a three-year undergraduate programme in Clinical Nutrition and Dietetics with a strong focus on food science, clinical nutrition, and public health nutrition. The curriculum blends theory and practice, supported by specialized laboratories such as the Nutrition and Dietetics Lab, Human Physiology Lab, and Food Preparation and Preservation Lab.

Eligibility Criteria

• Candidates who have passed the Higher Secondary Examination (10+2) or equivalent with Home Science / Chemistry with Biology as one of the subjects.
• Admission is based on merit and university regulations.

Purpose and Direction

• To equip students with strong conceptual foundations in clinical nutrition and hands-on experience in dietetics and community outreach.
• Focus on strengthening hospital linkages, interdisciplinary projects, and nutrition education initiatives to meet evolving healthcare needs.

Course Takeaways

Students gain expertise in nutritional biochemistry, therapeutic nutrition, diet planning, food service management, and public health nutrition. They also complete a one-month dietary internship in leading multi-speciality hospitals, building clinical exposure, counselling skills, and professional confidence.

Notable Accomplishments

• Ms. Karthiga of the 2022 graduating batch was awarded the Gold Medal by the University of Madras for outstanding academic performance
• Ms. P. Pavatharani of the 2023 graduating batch also received the Gold Medal from the University of Madras
• Ms. S. Mohanambigai of the 2024 graduating batch received the Gold Medal from the University of Madras
• Students won First Prize in the prestigious “Naan Mudhalvan Hackathon” conducted by the Tamil Nadu Government at the University of Madras for two consecutive academic years – 2024–2025 and 2025–2026
• Compulsory one-month dietary internship in leading multi-speciality hospitals in and around Chennai providing clinical exposure

• Collaboration with ICDS for National Nutrition Week (1st–7th September) including expos, competitions, and awareness campaigns on balanced diets and anaemia prevention
• Rashtriya Poshan Maah celebrations with food expos and exhibitions showcasing nutrient-rich recipes, functional foods, and innovative diet plans
